Iron Maiden is the obvious answer to the poll question, but the lack of Sabbath as an option is very suspect.
I thought about adding Sabbath, but I really consider them more heavy blues rock than Metal

still love the band, but at one time Metallica was punk, cause no one used the term Thrash yet

Cannibal Corpse, Priest and Death were all left off. I could have put like 20 bands up there. I tried to keep it minimal

just a matter of opinion

Sabbath invented heavy metal. Period.

it could be argued Judas Priest did too

Sabbath was the heaviest thing then, but it was still really bluesy and jazzy. As much as I love Sabbath, they didnt build the house of Metal, IMO

but they did create all the building materials

not the best audio on the last two, but pretty cool

Priest was part of The New Wave of British Heavy Metal, post Sabbath. It is indisputable that Sabbath created metal. It has been established as an anthropological fact.

You are literally the first person whom I've ever encountered in my 36 years on this planet that disputes this to any degree.

Im not disputing it, Im looking at it thru a different lens

it could be argued The Melvins created grunge, yet it was actually Black Flag

its a matter of opinion is all

Deep Purple can be argued to have "invented" heavy metal too.
thats what I mean

as well as Blue Cheer, Steppenwolf, AC/DC, etc

yet the first band, again IMO, to put all the modern day elements of 'Metal' together was Priest

AC/DC was "Metal" at the time, now theyre Hard Rock, again IMO

and this is coming from a guy who will call his first born son 'Bon' provided I have brain damage and want to have kids someday

Sabbath will go down as the ground breakers of metal. In 1970 they released "Black Sabbath" and "Paranoid" with songs such as Iron Man, Paranoid, NIB, Black Sabbath and Fairies Wear Boots. They were tuned down and heavy as fuck for that time period which, to my knowledge, nobody else was doing.

Personally, my pick is Metallica as the greatest of all time. They led the way in introducing a new style of metal, have a broader musical palette and made Master of Puppets.

What example do you have for Priest? Sabbath put out Children of the Grave in 1971 and that's pretty metal.

it was released the same day as the first Maiden album, but Priest just had time to hone their sound better

Im not saying Sabbath had NO Metal elements, but theyre like Zeppelin to me

at times theyre heavy, other times theyre not

Priest and Maiden were the first two to be Metal all the time, which is the key aspect IMO

I'm kind of a weirdo with my metal. I'm pretty open except for that I prefer metal that doesn't have cookie monster vocals.

I gotcha with Priest but with everything there's a seed that a tree comes from. Here's another from Sabbath that, to me, set the tone for years to come.

totally, like I said, Sabbath created everything needed for Metal, they just had a ton of other elements that stretched them to other styles of music

I LOVE Sabbath, but I wouldnt call them strictly a Metal band

tons of Metal elements, but the same goes for Alice in Chains and a ton of other bands

Speaking of Alice in Chains I never put them in the Grunge category. To me they were way too metal to be considered with Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Jerry Cantrell is one of my favorite guitarists/vocalists to listen to.

totally agree

Jerry is such a fucking good songwriter and player, and could put out some amazing Metal if he wanted to

out of Seattle I only really every got into AIC and Soundgarden

Definitely, did you know Alice in Chains was the opener on the Clash of the Titans tour featuring Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax?

Yeah

Very foreshadowing of things to come

I hope you caught the show/doc "Metal Evolution: the series"

Tons of great stories and interviews

Same guy who did the documentary "Metal: A Headbangers Journey"

The doc "Until The Light Takes Us" is a great doc about Norway black metal
