I want to say that's tampering with evidence but I guess it's tampering with what would have been potential evidence.

I'm in the camp that thinks he did it. He's in jail now. Any evidence like this has zero impact. Some sort of protected evidence might be of use, but even there it is unlikely unless some new technology has come about since the original trial.
