As the exclusive U.S. television home for New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW), AXS TV will premiere the promotion’s biggest show of the year, Wrestle Kingdom 12, in a three-hour special Saturday, Jan. 6 at 8pE/5pP. AXS TV FIGHTS CEO Andrew Simon made the announcement that the Wrestle Kingdom 12 national television broadcast marks the fastest turnaround time for the spectacular airing just two days after the event takes place at the Tokyo Dome. AXS TV’s Wrestle Kingdom 12 special will showcase the event’s three headlining championship matches: IWGP U.S. Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega vs. Chris Jericho, IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada vs. G1 CLIMAX 27 Tournament Champion Tetsuya Naito, and IWGP Intercontinental Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Jay White.

“While NJPW has delivered some of the greatest matches in wrestling history over the past year, we’ve seen viewership growth on AXS TV thanks to New Japan’s expansion in the U.S. and our commitment to air matches closer to when they take place,” said Simon. “With Wrestle Kingdom as their marquee annual event, we thank NJPW and TV Asahi for their support and are proud to kick off 2018 with this historic primetime Saturday night special featuring the dream match-up of Kenny Omega vs. Chris Jericho.”

AXS TV will continue its coverage of Wrestle Kingdom 12 following the special over five episodes Friday nights starting Jan. 12 at 8pE/5pP on the network’s award-winning weekly series, including the IWGP Jr. Tag Team Championship match between RPG 3K (Sho & Yoh) vs. The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson), the four-way IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship bout featuring Marty Scurll vs. Will Ospreay vs. KUSHIDA vs. Hiromu Takahashi, and the ROH World Title Match between Cody and Kota Ibushi. The championship matches featuring Tanahashi vs. White, Omega vs. Jericho and Okada vs. Naito will also have an encore airing during this time.

Leading up to the Wrestle Kingdom 12 special on Jan. 6, AXS TV will air an eight-hour marathon of NJPW starting at 12pE/9aP. Episodes in the marathon will feature matches that set up the main card at Wrestle Kingdom, including Omega winning the IWGP U.S. Heavyweight Title versus Tomohiro Ishii at the G1 Special in USA; Omega vs. Naito in the G1 CLIMAX 27 Tournament Finals; Omega’s first U.S. Heavyweight Title defense at Destruction in Kobe; an encore of the three-hour King of Pro-Wrestling special headlined by Okada vs. EVIL; and two episodes from Power Struggle headlined by Omega vs. Beretta featuring a special appearance by Jericho.

And the Wrestle Kingdom 12 card, as it currently stands, with more matches to be added later:

    1. IWGP Heavyweight Championship Match: Kazuchika Okada (c) vs. Tetsuya Naito
    2. IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship Match: Kenny Omega (c) vs. Chris Jericho
    3. IWGP Intercontinental Championship Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi (c) vs. Jay White
    4. IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship Match: Marty Scurll (c) vs. Hiromu Takahashi vs. KUSHIDA vs. Will Ospreay
    5. IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship Match: Roppongi 3K (c) vs. The Young Bucks
    6. Ring of Honor World Championship Match: Cody (c) vs. Kota Ibushi

I love JR, but I find him to be atrocious on NJPW. He's just winging it and collecting checks.

After Mixon got hurt, I checked out RAW and caught that 4-way CW match and it was pretty great. They booked it to actually get over for once and it was a pretty nice PWG-ish with just tons of highspots and crazy kickouts. The psychology was brutal with everybody kicking out of awesome top rope Spanish flys etc., but it highlighted the talent and made them look awesome, which is rare.

Also, and I know Dave pointed out how much of a really bad/weird idea the Sonya Deville call-up was, when they're planning on doing a Ronda/MMA angle and she's just going to look like an odd-man out and come across as a poser.

Well, there were really TWO things that kept Van Dam from hitting his peak in the "bigs" and we're lookin' at one of them right there lol.

I'm not a Van Dam guy by any stretch, but he was such an over top babyface act between '01 to '06 that even though he wasn't political AT ALL and was looked down upon for being a pothead, for being "too stiff" and not having psychology, I cannot think of another single talent that was as effectively underpushed, undermined and sabotaged to ensure his potential wasn't maximized, than RVD. Maybe Booker COULD'VE been bigger, but he wasn't as over and with Jericho, they'd always turn him heel to make sure he didn't have a consistent "top guy" babyface run and Edge and Rey had that "injury prone" stigma, even though neither of those guys blew their quads out a bunch of times and missed an equal amount of time as one of Vince's relatives.

They did a video promo with Beat doing his thing, and they'd switch over to Matt doing his thing and it was basically no reaction whenever Bray was up, and a pretty good one whenever Matt was up.

It wasn't bad per se, but it was like everything with Bray promos, in that the fans have been conditioned to give zero fucks about all of the gobbledygook BS they script for him, so the fans check out since there's nothing of consequence being said and in turn, the reactions to Matt were something, but were certainly tampered by the Bray inclusion.

I imagine that the amount of failed screenwriters on WWE creative who all want to shoehorn their horror movie ideas into Bray programs will undoubtedly make this Matt Hardy program a lot more convoluted and far less fun than it would be if they let Matt run with it himself. TBH, Bray's biggest weakness is that the writers LOVE writing for him, since it ends up being overly verbose nonsense and sounds like an unending soliloquy.

"Hey guys, we have a great idea for the storyline. We were watching some random YouTube vids and a spark of inspiration hit us after this video we watched. There was this guy who was doing a similar thing Matt is doing...you know, the whole wide-eyed, crazy rambling, over the top laugh and smile? Right, so anyway they have a drone, there's a fight, they shoot fireworks at each other. Just a bunch of crazy shit happening. They called it The Final Deletion, but I think we can come up with a better name and version of this."

"You guys know Jeff and I wrote the story ourselves, right?"

"What? That guy was Broken...you're Woken. Totally different. And wrestlers can't write their own scripts. Otherwise they'd be scriptwriters. So we have to work in the whole Stay Woke thing that's hot right now. I'm thinking we set you up with a fiery Latin woman."

    "My wife is Puerto Rican."

"Yeah but that doesn't count. What about if we put Tamina with you and just say she's Mexican?"

"That seems ridiculous. Fans will know th-"

"They're not gonna remember her Samoan heritage. She looks Mexican enough to pass. Also, this whole Delete chant you do kinda goes with the Broken idea we saw. Could you say Erase or Exterminate? Oooh, could we make you a robot that is sent to Earth to destroy humanity?"

I feel like that's how a writer's room in WWE would go nowadays.

I am hearing a story about a girl allegedly getting molested backstage by some worker Elgin booked, someone DM'd Elgin about it and took a screenshot of a conversation where I guess he was ripping into the girl, calling her a slut, etc and I guess it leaked and Elgin had a social media fire sale, got rid of all his accounts, and rumor is he sold his company too.
