Corny has Dave on his podcast this week, they're hands down the best listens of any wrestling podcasts since the two of them know more history than just about anybody and even though they'll disagree, the mutual respect and lifelong friendship makes for a really compelling and insightful listen.

Back when it was announced that FOX had acquired the broadcasting rights to WWE’s Smackdown Live, one of the reported negotiation tactics was to say that NBC was “embarrassed by” WWE’s product. Per a note in this week’s Observer, it sounds like FOX is also embarrassed by parts of WWE’s presentation, and is hoping to make some lasting changes when the show joins their lineup next Fall.

The note mentions how FOX is intent on including a Friday edition of Smackdown Live as a part of their new Thursday-through-Sunday sports programming block, which means more of a lean toward sports than entertainment. Specifically, getting rid of Vince McMahon’s horrible, horrible idea of “comedy.”

FOX supposedly wants to use Smackdown for cross-promotion with their other shows — something Smackdown’s been down with from the beginning; Shasta McNasty, I’m looking in YOUR direction — which means having stars and personalities from their other sports shows pop in to promote. That also works in the other direction, and it’s a lot easier for sports guys to promote an athletically-centered wrestling program than to, say, ask you to watch R-Truth dress up like Sherlock Holmes while Vince gets his face shoved into Stephanie’s butt, or whatever.

I mean, when mainstream folks get into bed with Vince, they fall into two very distinct categories:

    1. They cede complete control to Vince to run the entire wrestling side, since in their eyes he's the biggest/best promoter in the history of the business and buy WWE's version of history hook, line and sinker (ESPN).
    or
    2. They almost immediately realize that Vince is an isolated, miopic carny fuck who has zero handle on the real world and is so accustomed to being sycophantically catered to 24/7, that conflicts that arise through his erratic, knee-jerk impulsiveness by looking at him like he's an unmitigated lunatic (XFL, Dwayne post-WWE).

The viewership erosion is a REAL thing and the five hours of first run programming is overkill and vastly unsustainable, sacrificing too much in the long run when you see the massive decrease in numbers, contrasted with the short-term value in the third hour RAW rights fee this go-around.

Ultimately, as long as Vince is involved, you're going to see the same inconsistent, zero trajectory booking and abysmal characters because he's been rewarded this far without being good at the creative component for so long and IMO, the move to FOX is going to be a massive wakeup call for all involved, since it's a product that I can't see existing for a wider audience when they bury people that fans want to cheer, give up on storylines and pushes two weeks in and don't present anybody as special.

Vince will hotshot like a MFer to try and kick off the FOX run with a bang, but sustained, heated booking isn't his strong suit to say the least and eventually, with the company's inability to establish new, fresh top acts, they're going to get stale, the ratings will be shit for the time slot and if I were a betting man, I'd hazard FS1 will be getting that show within two years unless they all of a sudden start booking a hot pro wrestling product, which I haven't seen any indication they care to do as long as Dunn and Vince are around and in power.

I would be tickled to death if some of the Fox Sports folks actually looked at the full WWE catalog (NXT, CWC, MYC) as well as other promotions and came to Vince saying "nah, we want more of that (NXT) and way less of that (Raw)."
