WASHINGTON -- The predominant theme of the Republican presidential primary has been, so far, that there is no primary at all. Only a few individuals have formally declared their candidacies. They aren't considered to be serious contenders. This past week, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich unveiled a website announcing an exploratory phase to consider a presidential run. He was widely ridiculed for tepid toe dipping.

So what gives? Depending on whom you ask you get various explanations. On Sunday morning, Fox News correspondent Juan Williams suggested that each prospective candidate was fearful of the type of political machinery that President Obama would assemble for his reelection campaign. The thesis was met with howls, but former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee has said much the same, in explaining why he hasn’t announced yet.

The landscape, at least currently, isn’t favorably disposed toward the Republican field and no one seems eager or poised to emerge from the larger pack. Underscoring the latter point, a Democratic source passed over this screen grab from Sunday’s edition of "State of the Union" on CNN, highlighting a little noticed nugget from the latest NBC/Wall Street Journal poll.

Among major Republican figures polled, real estate magnate and reality TV show king Donald Trump had the highest “positive” rating at 26 percent. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney had a 25 percent positive rating. Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty had a 10 percent positive rating. House Speaker John Boehner (not a prospective presidential candidate) had a 20 percent positive rating.

To be sure, the field of those polled wasn't limited strictly to Republicans (who will decide their own presidential candidate) and many of the respondents were more familiar with Trump’s name than with, certainly, Pawlenty’s. As such, the former has a much higher negative rating (29 percent) than the latter (nine percent). But that only goes to underscore the limited star power of the current GOP field and how great a deficit the eventual GOP nominee will suffer when going up against Obama.

The ONLY reason I would even entertain the thought of voting for Trump is his ability to make money. Our country needs to start making some serious money. Our annual GDP to debt ratio keeps getting tighter and tighter. The moment our annual debt exceeds our annual GDP we are super fucked. If he had a fiscal plan to energize the economy that was out of this world I would consider it.

Trump's supposed financial abilities are mostly a lot of PR nonsense.

Remember that about a bit over a decade ago he had almost a BILLION in debt and declared bankruptcy after a string of shitty financial decisions. He has since pulled himself out of that, but his finances have always been up and down.

Really he took his dad's money (his dad had a HUGE personal fortune), blew most of it on bad business deals, then made it back and then some. But I think that there are a TON of people out there who could make money if you gave them a few hundred million to invest, and they could do it without going $900 million in the hole and having to declare bankruptcy twice along the way. Hell, he just had one of the properties he owned declare bankruptcy because he didnt want to pay debtors on what was a shitty business deal.

Trump is a study of how to trick people into thinking that you are really good at something with PR, but he isnt close to being a top tier businessman.

You know what? As long as my healthcare premium at work doesn't increase another 43% (of which now comes out of my salary) in one year I don't give a fuck if Gary Busey is president.

Someone who doesn't realize that even IF Obama was born outside of the United States (he wasn't) his mother was a natural born citizen of the United States and held her citizenship during the time of his birth and in doing so makes him an automatic United States citizen by birth.

If I am born of an American mother in the Sahara desert I am still an American citizen due to my mothers citizenship, unless she has renounced her citizenship and accepted citizenship elsewhere.

If the reason we are voting for Trump, meaning the reason people are told they should vote for Trump, is the fact that he is a 'good / great businessman' then why in the flying fuck are we not voting for Les Wexner of Ohio at $7B (Limited Brands owner/Victoria Secret), or Bill Gates $70B + who is considered the richest man in the world, or Warren Buffett who is in the top five of richest persons in the world $65B +, Mark Zuckerberg, Michael Bloomberg, Elon Musk...lets just say this,

if we are going to vote for someone because of their supposed ability to do well in the business sector and 'make a lot of money' then there are 142 other Americans who are richer and more successful than trump.
