This irritates me to no end.

I have to pay a fortune (relatively speaking) due to the shithole town I'm in.

I'm supposed to get 400% higher up;pad speeds than I do.

I can download a FULL blu-ray at 50gb in like 40 minutes. But it takes FOREVER to upload shit, and think about it. i make a lot of videos. it SUCKS and I can't get uverse here yet that's over 6mbps

i can down around 1.8 mb per second on my laptop which is good, especially since my brother can't reach 1mb per second on Bell. but yeah uploading is always slower.

I pay for Timewarners Wide Band which is supposed to get around 100 MBPS. My last speed test on my pc saw me getting 60 MBPS. I don't care about upload speed as I rarely upload anything.

The other night I was downloading a 22 GB game to my Xbox one and that shit took 3 hours. I don't know why it took so long.

Fios Quantum, they offer almost equal download & upload speeds. Not bad test results, when paying for 60 down/60 upload.

    suck dick.

    FUck you charter.

I use my neighbors half the fucking time because mine sucks giant donkey balls.

I did break the antenna of my router though in a drunken stuper, so I should probably get another one of those before bitching too much.

I'm at 24 megabits down and 5 up, which is sadly the best offered where I live. My friends are actually jealous of it, just to let you know how shitty the internet is here in SC.

I run into an interesting issue when discussing this with people, besides Thump you guys all know the number you are being quoted and shown is not the matching number to file sizes? Bit and Byte is how ISP's make their shit sound so fast and con you into thinking your speeds are so high. Some people already know this but I am surprised how many don't.

I know the speeds aren't as advertised but I don't know the technical aspects of it. I know that while speed tests tell me I'm getting 60 plus, if I download a file that's say, a gigabyte, it should take less than 20 seconds if it's as advertised. But it takes about 4 minutes in reality. And no I don't know anything about the tech side of it.

Actually believe it or not, MANY of the techs I've spoken to at fucking DATACENTERS, not just providers, fucking datacenters, don't know the difference between bit and Byte

but actually, i don't think tnjey're being misleading. The industry standard is to talk about mbps megaBITs per second. but iv'e had conversations and even recorded it once for proof, of a salesperson at the largest upstream provider in the world not knowing the difference

so 8 bits to a byte, etc et so 10 megabytes is comparable to 80 megabits but that's how network traffic is normally stated

most confusion i see is people not understanding the difference between k and K which is of course 1K is 8k

then of course back in the dial up days you had to figure modulation so add 2k for overhead per K. course that isn't as relevant now with broadband

It's weird. I did the TW test and it was totally different. Some one ain't on the up and up.

and I'd probably sacrifice one of my nuts to get fios. and probably both to get google fiber.

It's actually a very strong factor in where I'm moving next. i may very well move to the new google fiber location 1gb Up and down. unreal and it's pure fiber so damn near zero latency

    it will be different everywhere.

those tests vary drastically due to routing, and where the test server is located.

the best all around place is speedtest.net and just keep charting. it keeps records. because those tests could be using a server 10 miles from you, or 5000 (speedtest.net allows you to choose which server you want to test from) and there is of course an enormous difference in jitter, latency and packet loss which goes up exponentially with distance.

not to mention the factor of BGP routing which can change the path you take in the middle of a test. There are SO many variables when considering that stuff

the screenshot I put up was from my provider's test server. i use it because it's a clean path and i don't go outside their network

Noone here offers parity on the retail level, it such unreal horseshit. I miss my '00 DSL company that thought it rule the world and offered 768K up and down for 60 a month. I was so so so happy, of course they went out of business though.

Dude I had an ISDN line and was a GOD playing Quakeworld because i owned everyone else on internet speed. I was running the fastest throughput of anyone i'd ever even heard of at the time....

    with a whopping 128Kbps

then I blew that shit out of the water with REAl SPEED a few years later.... my T-1 at 1.44 MEGAFUCKING bits.

I get the network side of it, I just think it is a misleading thing to do to people who don't get the difference. They expect by doing the math at 50 mbps they are going to download a 500 MB file 10 seconds. It further illustrates me point when you point out the people AT the places don't even know that file sizes and network latency have almost nothing to with each other when directly comparing the basic numbers to the lay person. Yet people expect it to.

For a year I lived in an apartment above a law firm that advertised internet came with it charged in the rent. Guy who owned the building had no idea the internet was spliced off the firms T1 line. After they closed I mainlined the holy shit out of that in Quake as well. SO HA!

You would have to know how far your neighbors wifi signal is from you, you could spend 30 bucks on an extender if they don't care you steal it.

It's just my supplemental plan. I have my network secured, and there are 2 reliable and 1 unreliable unsecured networks I have access to from my home. Those are the one's I download the ladyboy porn on.
