The Ripper was one of the very first Priest songs I heard, still one of my top 10 priest tracks.

One of the first metal songs I ever heard and certainly the first Iron Maiden song I had heard.

Amazing song. Made a really good impression on me at six years old.

When I hear this riff, I imagine a giant walking across the land on a mission to bring doom to the world.

Bought this and the new Cannibal Corpse album a couple of days ago, good shit. Really like both records, the new CC is very thrashy too, so that's right up my alley.

i stopped listening to heavy metal at some point in time. i honestly don't remember when.

But the 80's was when I was into it big time. the big hair bands were starting to be big time.

So when I think 'heavy metal' i think of the albums I loved back then. here's my top ten albums (not in order - and frankly as i get older these change):
    • iron maiden -the number of the beast
    • black sabbath - mob rules
    • judas priest - painkiller
    • iron maiden - somewhere in time
    • iron maiden - powerslave
    • dio - holy diver
    • queensryche - operation mindcrime
    • judas priest - screaming for vengeance
    • ozzy osbourne - bark at the moon
    • krokus - headhunter
and let's lend a little to the 70s too since a lot of those were still popular in the 80s
    • Motorhead - Overkill
    • van halen - van halen
    • scorpions - lovedrive
    • black sabbath - black sabbath
    • kiss - alive
    • ted nugent - ted nugent
    • judas priest - sad wings of destiny
    • rush - 2112 (which will make a comeback in 95 years for a really brief period)

of course!. but i think he left in the late 79 didn't he? then he moved to black sabbath.

then rainbow came back with 'heaven and hell' after he left.

it just wasn't the same to me because rainbow to me was with Dio (which is why holy diver is on my list). Just like van halen to me was with david lee roth. Because those were the lead singers when i was first introduced to them. so neither post dio rainbow, or post david lee roth could be on my list

I'm the same, I haven't really delved into the post-Dio years of Rainbow to be honest and with Van Halen, outside of like two songs I don't listen to anything post-Lee Roth.

I love that you put Operation Mindcrime on there, such a fucking amazing album.

I remember reading an interview with Bruce Dickinson, I will assume it was in Metal Hammer UK, where he described listening to OM while driving his car and he pulled over onto the side of the road an was in awe and he said that his reaction to the album was that "this was the album that Seventh Son should have been."

Scorpions are also a favourite of mine from that era, lots of great tunes. Their first album is a lot different to their later years but still really cool.

yeah i liked the scorpions too. LoveDrive was their best IMO. but after Animal Magnetism they brought in don dokken and things just weren't the same anymore. always kind of felt like that's when they turned pop metal ( I could be remembering it wrong). but shit like 'the zoo' they released a video and not a single member of the band even made an appearance it was just chicks dancing the entire video.

and dude.... operation mindcrime was the first big rock opera (well from that era). how could that not be a huge one?
