The 10 Stages of Genocide

This is a very long read. Outside of introducing the topic I will not put much of my personal opinions in the original post, I will respond to comments and/or disagreements.

I've long studied WW2 and other authoritative regimes and wondered how countries who weren't quite authoritarian devolve into almost welcoming the authoritarian approach during times of steep decline (economically or moral or both). Reading this stuck out to me, the 10 steps of genocide by Professor Gregory Stanton. I believe Naomi Wolfe patterned her book The End of America after Professor Stanton's works, they basically say the same thing just with her own input for specifically the Bush Administration at the time (though I watched the documentary and skimmed the book I thought she was being hyperbolic at the time).

Below are the stages Professor Stanton outlines of how a nation devolves and then I've taken news articles that match some of the scenarios outlined.

Stage 1. Classification People are divided into "them and us".

Stage 2. Symbolization "When combined with hatred, symbols may be forced upon unwilling members of pariah groups...

Stage 3. Dehumanization - "One group denies the humanity of the other group. Members of it are equated with animals, vermin, insects, or diseases."

***The following is an opinion piece so take it as you will.

Stage 4. Organization - "Genocide is always organized... Special army units or militias are often trained and armed..."

    ***Possible hurdle***

Stage 5. Polarization - "Hate groups broadcast polarizing propaganda..."
Prevention - "Prevention may mean security protection for moderate leaders or assistance to human rights groups...Coups d’état by extremists should be opposed by international sanctions."

Stage 6. Preparation - "Victims are identified and separated out because of their ethnic or religious identity..."
Prevention - "At this stage, a Genocide Emergency must be declared. ..."

***Edit, I do not believe this is hate group propaganda but
Stage 7. Extermination -"It is 'extermination' to the killers because they do not believe their victims to be fully human".

Stage 8. Denial - "The perpetrators... deny that they committed any crimes..."
Prevention - "The response to denial is punishment by an international tribunal or national courts"
