Alright you dirty, illiterate heathens it's time for book club to start. Right now, we don't have any rules or guidelines other than read the book and want to talk about it. Since we all read at different paces, we'll figure out how to do this as we go.

Book number one is Fire and Blood. Reading starts this week but we'll probably start slow if you still need to buy the book.

How about we can only talk about Aegon’s conquest of Westeros until you and I are done with that section? Spoiler alert: he conquers the seven kingdoms.

@AnchorPunch we are only talking about the first chapter, correct? Is it weird we are reading a history book on a fictitious world? I am liking the book so far; I’m just trying not to be bummed that it’s not Winds of Winter. This is only part one as he has a second book for the history of the Targaryens.

@jesusatemyhotdog you are a fan of GOT, right? I think I’ve seen you post in the tv thread. Are you reading this?

So far in my twenty pages two things have jumped out. I didn’t know that it was rumored that Baratheon might be a Targaryen bastard. I thought Ageon was the first Targaryen to come to Westeros. He is not from Valerya, so Ageon’s dad was with them when they came to Westeros??? Is Baratheon from Vallarta as well? Second Baratheon takes the princess from the Stormlands after her men chain, gag, and tie her up naked to be his wife (after not surrendering her castle). I’d hate to be those unfortunate dudes that made that decision. Would t she hold a grudge to that?

If I was Warren Buffet I’d go to HBO and demand a series on Ageon immediately, and help fund it.

It's mentioned in the books and the show that Robert has Targaryen blood in his veins. The first Baratheon was a bastard Targaryen, but given a name due to his relationship to the king. I believe he was his cousin. During Robert's short time in the series, he mentions his Targaryen blood, as do other characters.

The best tool to understand Westeros, imo, is a podcast called Hardcore Game of Thrones. It's about 8 episodes, I believe. Each episode is 1-3 hours, and it basically goes over the history of Essos and Westeros for everything leading up to the main series, as well as just about every plot involving Tywin. You can listen on Stitcher Premium, or maybe can find it free on SoundCloud if you look for it. It really made reading the books a lot easier for me and I feel like I have a pretty strong grasp on who is who in the series, mostly because of this podcast.

Did GRRM endorse the podcast? Does it come from him? Or is it fan made like I think that history of Westeros book is ( I think GRRM had input).

I have a not so good memory, some details I might forget. I probably had seen/heard about Robert’s Targaryen blood, but had forgot it.

While reading Martin I typically don’t worry about all the names. I have to focus more on the story. I’d wouldn’t be able to enjoy it if I had to remember all of those details. My mind just isn’t trained, or can’t handle all of that. I wish it could, but I have to adapt to how I can best enjoy the book.

    That podcast does sound interesting.

I have attention problems and my mind wonders. It has taken a lot of time and effort for me to get to where I can read without my mind wondering. It still does sometimes and I’ll have to stop and go back and reread a page or two. I think meditating has helped.

The podcast is presented as if it were a history podcast, and it references the various Martin books as if they’re historical documents rather than novels. Honestly, I feel like it’s a must hear for fans of the series

I don’t do podcast. I don’t have anything against them I just haven’t really done it. I only use my phone, as I don’t have a lap top or home computer (in country and slow internet).I’ve listened to JRE a few times on YouTube. What do I do if I want to hear the podcast you are talking about? Go to YouTube? My kids can get Pokémon on our tv through my wife’s phone on YouTube (I think it’s through YouTube).. Maybe I could do that? I live in the dark ages still. I’d like to hear it.

Stitcher Premium is an app for your phone. I’m pretty sure you get a free month if you’re new to it. It’s 5$ a month after that. I’d do the free month, listen to the show. You can see how much you like it.

The War of the Five Kings is probably episode 6, maybe 7. It’s hard to say because on the app they’re titled numerically, no subtitle. It basically covers all the history of Westeros, in order, leading up to the war of the five kings, so that episode would be towards the end.

    How’re you liking it, though?

It's silly but in a good way. Really enjoying it. But will need to stop after today for a while because reading one history of Westeros while listening to another is going to be too much :) You joining us for book club?

Don’t believe so. I’m knee deep in the Harry Potter books right now, then have a bunch more crap to go through

Sorry, book club is only for serious historical dramas like Game of Thrones. We're far too sophisticated to read fantasy like Harry Potter.
