Personally, I would retire today if I had the means. My goal is to retire as early as possible so I can enjoy my life. For me, working is just a way to earn a living. Sure, some satisfaction can be had on my job, but I don't have an undying desire to work, like some people do. I could easily fill my day with things that I want to do.

I had what I thought was my dream job for the last 12 years, where I made very good money, and enjoyed the job. Sadly, a different vision from the owner had us go our separate ways. Now, I am doing the same kind of work for a fraction of what I was making, so it is definitely not a long term solution. I am exploring other opportunities, and hope to land on something that will allow me to live my life according to the lifestyle I have enjoyed with my previous job. I do not need to be wealthy at all, just want to be able to pay my bills, and have enough to retire on and maintain my lifestyle.

On the flip-side, I certainly know people who only live to work. They do whatever it takes to make more money, and it is seemingly never enough. They miss much of their children growing up, as well as other life's pleasures. More power to them, but that is definitely not me.

    What are your views?

I'm in school earning dual degrees in electrical technology and industrial automation. After that I will take four more classes and earn a third degree in electronic engineering. I will likely go work for Mercedes as I have a solid connection there. They will pay for my masters and I will go to work foe their research and development department. At which point I will be living to work, and I will be rich.

A little bit of both. Even if I could quit my job today, I'd still be writing code and designing gadgets, just not for someone else.

I could never work again and be happy. I like learning, but rather I like being taught. We're it up to me I'd be a full time student.

I like my current job but I don't live for it. I'm not a dream chaser, I don't have them. Definitely not an ambitious individual, if there's something I "love" to do, I've yet to find it. I'm not willing to quit my job and relocate my life for any job or cause I'm aware of honestly.

There isn't one thing I could consider dedicating my every waking thought to, including children. I'd like to have certain traits but the fact I don't is nothing I lament.

I work for my kids and wife to live.

I've always been pretty content to do whatever it took to make a decent living and live above the standard I grew up in (dirt poor). I'm fine with that if it equates to my children enjoying some type of comfort in their lives.

I'm beyond whining about whether or not I love what I do. I've worked incredibly hard for chicken scratch and I've done administrative stuff for great pay.

Work to live, certainly. I'd retire today if I could. Although, I'd probably take a stab at opening my own business. A restaurant or baseball training center.

I hate that it has to be one of those two options in this world. I despise work. I want to be like that guy in office space who just does nothing. That's all. Focus on whatever hobbies I'm focusing on at the time. Work on improving my strengths as a person. I would be as happy as happy gets. Wouldn't even need much more than a small place and internet and some basics of comfort.

My profession is ok, but ok doesn't justify spending half our life on it. I wouldn't be happy dedicating that much of my life to anything other than a hobby I love. So I work for money. Use money for life and hobbies.

I'm with you on that one. As long as the family is happy and I can give them what I didn't have I don't care. I grew up with the old school belief, most people are not happy with their job and work to get by. It sucks I know but I try to find the good in my job but I don't think it'll ever be something I'll be excited to go to.

At some point, society started telling everyone they were special and entitled to being happy and satisfied. That shit's a fairy tale.

I'm not saying you can't be content and enjoy your job or never settle for less than what you want. What I'm saying is that you're not special or entitled to it.

My dad used to laugh about certain college degrees my sisters and brothers were looking at.

He said: You can get an art degree and draw a picture of yourself being broke. You can get a philosophy degree and ponder why you're broke and you can get a Poli-Sci degree and bitch about how it's the Government's fault you're broke.

No matter how you spin it, you're broke and up to your ass in student loan debt.

That is exactly my goal as well, 20 years. I was on track to have the house paid off by then, but my recent job change has derailed that somewhat.

I grew up in housing commission with a single mother of four children( im the youngest). I had one school uniform every new year which i would have to wash and wear everyday, i had weeks with no power in the house because mum spent to money on dumb shit instead of bills and i had weeks in winter where we had to have cold showers because she didnt pay the gas bill. I went on one school excursion my entire schooling life( i completed my HSC).

I now work a job in metal fabrication/powdercoating tyat earns me in the neighbourhood of $65,000 a year i work very hard sometimes 6 days a week. I do it all so my children never have to put up with the shit i had to. If i won tue lottery tomorrow i would quit my job and learn or find something i love to do, but i would still work.
